Week Two: American & SunBelt Weekend Recap

American Athletic Conference

Navy 28 – Connecticut 24

In the opening game of American Conference play, the Midshipmen (2-0, 1-0 AAC) were able to hold on to the win, after letting go of a 21-point lead over the Huskies (1-1, 0-1 AAC). Navy QB Will Worth threw for 130 yards and rushed for two scores in his first start, after losing QB Tago Smith to an ACL tear the previous week. UConn’s senior WR Noel Thomas caught 11 passes for 116 yards and a touchdown in the loss.

East Carolina 33 – NC State 30

After defeating the Wolfpack (1-1) on Saturday, the Pirates (2-0, 0-0 AAC) have now won six straight over ACC opponents with two wins each over N.C. State, North Carolina, and Virginia Tech. Senior QB Phillip Nelson threw for 297 yards and a touchdown, while the Pirates’ ground game accounted for the other three scores.

#6 Houston 42 – Lamar 0

Even with a 3.5-hour delay, the Cougars (2-0, 0-0 AAC) showed a dominating performance on Saturday’s game against the Cardinals (0-2). Starting QB Greg Ward Jr. was sidelined with an injury, but Houston took that opportunity to showcase their run game, racking up 381 yards and six scores on the ground. For the first time since 1974, three Cougars had over 100 yards rushing.

Cincinnati (2-0, 0-0 AAC) defeated Purdue, 38- 20.

Temple (1-1, 0-0 AAC) defeated Stony Brook, 38-0.

South Florida (2-0, 0-0 AAC) defeated Northern Illinois, 48-17.

Tulane (1-1, 0-0 AAC) defeated Southern, 66-21.

#23 Baylor defeated SMU (1-1, 0-0 AAC), 40-13.

#5 Michigan defeated UCF (1-1, 0-0 AAC), 51-14.

#4 Ohio State defeated Tulsa (1-1, 0-0 AAC), 48-3.

SunBelt Conference

Georgia Southern 24 – South Alabama 9

The SunBelt began conference play this past weekend with a matchup between the Eagles (2-0, 1-0 SBC) and the Jaguars (1-1, 0-1 SBC). A week after South Alabama upset Mississippi State, they struggled to find their way into the end zone, scoring only three field goals in the game. The Eagles racked up 304 yards on the ground, including 108 yards from Senior QB Favian Upshaw. Georgia Southern has rushed for a combined 724 yards in its first two games.

New Mexico State 32 – New Mexico 31

For the first time since 2010, the Aggies (1-1, 0-0 SBC) topped the Lobos (1-1) at Aggie Memorial Stadium. Senior QB Tyler Rogers threw for 205 yards and two scores, including connecting with WR Gregory Hogan late in the fourth quarter for what would be the winning touchdown for the Aggies.

Appalachian State (1-1, 0-0 SBC) defeated Old Dominion, 31-7.

Louisiana Lafayette (1-1, 0-0 SBC) defeated McNeese, 30-22.

#2 Clemson defeated Troy (1-1, 0-0 SBC), 30-24.

Auburn defeated Arkansas State (0-2, 0-0 SBC), 51-14.

Air Force defeated Georgia State (0-2, 0-0 SBC) 48-14.

#14 Oklahoma defeated Louisiana Monroe (1-1, 0-0 SBC), 59-17.

#8 Washington defeated Idaho (1-1, 0-0 SBC), 59-14.
