ORLANDO, Fla. (CureBowl.com) — The Cure Bowl is once again recognized as the No. 1 Bowl Game by CBS Sports.
Coastal Carolina used a stop at the goal line as time expired to win the 2021 Tailgreeter Cure Bowl, by defeating NIU 47-41, on Dec. 17 at Exploria Stadium.
This was Coastal Carolina’s (11-2) first-ever bowl game victory. The Chanticleers made their second-straight appearance in the Cure Bowl and avenged a heartbreaking overtime loss to Liberty in the 2020 FBC Mortgage Cure Bowl. Read more about the Tailgreeter Cure Bowl here.
The seventh annual Cure Bowl was recognized by CBS Sports as the No. 1 college bowl game of 2021on Thursday, January 6th. This will be the second-straight year CBS Sports rated the Cure Bowl as the No. 1 bowl game.
CBS Sports explains why the Tailgreeter Bowl finished as the No. 1 overall bowl game.
“Not only was it a one-score game the entire time, but the lead changed seven times. It was nonstop, back-and-forth football entertainment. Coastal couldn’t stop Northern Illinois, and the Huskies couldn’t stop the Chanticleers.
Aside from the final possession of the half, the first 12 possessions of the game ended with points, and only three of them ended in field goals. When Coastal’s Charles Ouverson came onto the field for the contest’s first punt, he did so with only 54 seconds left in the third quarter.
It came down to the very last play, too. Northern Illinois had the ball at the Coastal 8-yard line with 2 seconds left, but Lombardi’s pass to Joiner was stopped short of the end zone and the Chanticleers held on for the win.”
